Why you should read the fine print when your kid volunteers for something at school.

Voiceover: Dr. E before a major surgery. Look how serious and determined she is as she prepares to put her extraordinary surgery skills to use yet again. Note the extreme concentration as she plans and maps out her best approach to removing a lemon-sized tumor from...a rat. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, a rat. This veterinarian does not discriminate against our rodent friends, believing that they, too should get quality veterinary care. Will she be successful? Will the rat survive? Will little Bobby's parents regret letting their kid "foster" the class pet this semester hence becoming responsible for its veterinary bills? We'll find out soon...

Okay should I be laughing or is that cruel? Because I am....

I'm with Heidi on the laughter thing. Is it appropriate, or is it horrible? You really must give more details on this one, and the poor little rat's prognosis.

We used to keep rats (among other rodents) as pets and I've always wondered why those buggers grow so many tumors. We must have raised a thousand mice over the years, and I don't remember any of them developing tumors. All but one of rats ended up with them.

Is laughing inappropriate here? I want to smile and giggle, but then I feel terrible about the poor rat's condition.

Bailey was just in for her annual check up a few weeks ago and the vet noticed a half moon shape in her eye that she thought was a cataract... I've been worried about it ever since (even though she gave me a referral to an opthamologist and said it's OK to just keep watching it for the next year). I can't imagine her having a tumor like that poor rat!

Oh. My. Do I dare ask how much a procedure like that might actually cost?? If it's more than tuition, I would demand a free year or two for my kid from the school! How did the rat fare from the surgery?
